Individuals with substance abuse disorders, including opioid use disorder (OUD), who are in treatment or recovery, may face potentially discriminatory barriers to employment, participation in government programs, or access to public accommodations. For example, an individual may have a job offer revoked after an employer learns that the individual in medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for OUD. In this presentation, the Department of Justice will discuss the protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for people with OUD who are in treatment or recovery.

David Knight is a trial attorney for the Disability Rights Section in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. As part of his work, he provides trainings and presentations throughout the country disability discrimination under the ADA. He is part of the team at DOJ addressing OUD-related discrimination under the ADA.
