CORT First Friday Webinar - Appellate Writing

Description

This presentation will give advocates tools for writing better briefs by offering practical advice to make appellate writing more compelling and helpful to the court. It will cover how to write to your audience, what’s important and what’s distracting, methods to make the brief understandable and readable, and how to use all prescribed parts of the brief to advocate. Most aspects of this presentation also will be useful for legal writers in non-appellate settings because of the focus on audience, readability, and not doing stupid stuff.

About the Presenter:

Jon Laramore has been executive director of Indiana Legal Services since 2015. Before joining ILS, he was an appellate practitioner in government and private practice, arguing more than 100 appeals in state and federal courts, including Mellouli v. Holder in the U.S. Supreme Court in 2015. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers and the American Law Institute. He has been chief counsel to two Indiana governors, chief counsel and special counsel to the Indiana Attorney General, and leader of the appellate practice at a large law firm.
