Basic Lawyer Skills Training (BLST)

DESCRIPTION: The Committee on Regional Training (CORT) is sponsoring a Basic Lawyering Skills Training (BLST) for new legal services attorneys. The training will be held Wednesday, November 29th – Friday, December the 1st of 2017 at Olgebay Resort & Conference Center, 465 Lodge Drive, Wheeling, West Virginia.

BLST is the first in CORT’s coordinated scheduled of skills training for legal services attorneys. This conference is aimed at those with less than 18 months experience, its focus is the practical day-to-day skills of lawyering in the context of legal services work.

A case problem will be used to teach basic elements of interviewing, case planning, motion practice, discovery, negotiations, trial preparation, and basic trial skills.

We have applied for Ohio, West Virginia and Indiana CLE credits for this training. CORT is a recognized training sponsor in West Virginia.

REGISTRATION FEES: As a CORT-sponsored event, there is no registration fee for programs participating in CORT. For registrants from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and West Virginia legal services programs not participating in CORT, the registration fee is $650.

ROOM AND BOARD: CORT will bill programs for the cost of rooms and meals after the training. The daily cost of sleeping rooms is $115 (plus applicable county/bed taxes). If participants share rooms, CORT will divide the cost of the room by the number of occupants and bill programs accordingly. The total cost for lunches for three days is $56.89. Continental breakfasts, beverages and breaks will be provided as part of CORT's hospitality on all three days. Dinners are the responsibility of the participants.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Please return this registration no later than Wednesday October 25, 2017. Once registered, you will receive a confirmation letter or email prior to the training. IF you do not receive a confirmation notice by Friday, October 27, 2017, please contact the training coordinators at the above addresses. This training will be capped at a limit of 40 participants, but will maintain a waiting list on a first come, first served basis if more than 40 participants register.

CANCELLATION DEADLINE: You must cancel your registration on or before Monday, October 30, 2017. If you cancel after October the 30th, your spot will be filled utilizing the wait list if a wait list is maintained. If there is no wait list, then registrants canceling after this date risk their program being billed for any unavoidable costs incurred as a result of the late cancellation.
