CORT/Shriver Community Lawyering

Description

The Committee on Regional Training (CORT) and The Shriver Center will be presenting a Community Lawyering Training on September 17-19 in Cleveland, Ohio. Promoting an expansive view of a legal aid lawyer’s role, Community Lawyering stresses the importance of thinking beyond litigation (while retaining litigation as a vital tool) in addressing the kinds of structural problems low-income communities face. Participants learn the multi-tactic tools of a successful advocacy campaign, including media and outreach skills, facilitative leadership, action research, targeted planning, and campaign feasibility.

This training is designed for legal aid staff or staff and local community leaders attending in teams. However legal aid staff can attend without community leaders.

Please note: This training requires about 2.5 hours of pre-training online activities the week prior to the training.

What You Will Learn

• The range of relationships and activities that constitute “community lawyering.”
• Tools for learning about and building relationships with communities.
• How to use various analytic and research tools including stakeholder analyses and power-mapping to evaluate the efficacy of particular strategies.
• How to use a range of community building, community development and advocacy tools (e.g., media advocacy, legislative and policy advocacy and community legal education) to achieve community goals.
• How to create a successful strategic communications plan.
• How to work effectively with community organizers.
• How to work effectively across issues of power and difference.

LOCATION

The training will be held at Tucker Ellis law firm located at 950 Main Avenue, Suite 1100 Cleveland, OH. Hotel rooms have been reserved at Aloft hotel in Cleveland- 1111 West 10th Street, Cleveland OH 44113. The hotel is part of a building complex, and the training will take place in this complex in suites provided by the law firm

REGISTRATION FEES

As a CORT-sponsored event, there is no fee for programs participating in CORT from Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia.

ROOM AND BOARD

CORT will bill programs for the cost of rooms and lunches after the training. The daily cost of sleeping rooms will be $139/night (plus county/bed taxes), single/double. If participants share rooms, CORT will divide the cost of the room by the number of occupants and bill programs accordingly. The daily cost of lunch billed to trainees’ programs will be $30. Continental breakfast and snacks will be provided at the event, included as hospitality. Dinner is the responsibility of the participant.

CANCELLATION DEADLINE

Program fees are not refundable. Registered participants who cannot attend may send substitutes as long as 14 days advance written notice is provided through an email to training@povertylaw.org. This must be done by Wednesday, September 3rd.
