Financial and custodial arrangements established in a family law case can have huge consequences under the Affordable Care Act – both good and bad. If family law practitioners don’t understand how it works, bad things can happen. For example, if you get your client a little bit more money but that causes her to lose Medicaid as a result, did she authorize that trade-off – or did it happen because you didn’t realize the effect it would have? Conversely, if you can make the other side Medicaid eligible at no cost to your client, are you using that bargaining leverage to get something else your client wants?

If you think it’s all just too complicated to figure out, well … we’re here to help. We’ll go over the rules and methods of eligibility. We’ll use a series of real world legal aid family law case examples, that show where the pitfalls lie and where advantages may exist. (Not as entertaining as Aunt Bea, George & Louise Jefferson, or Demi Moore, but more reality-based.) And we’ll give you some materials that will help you analyze the cases in your own day-to-day work.
