The landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges not only granted nationwide marriage equality, but has also sparked an increased interest and need for legal services by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community members. Find out how the marriage equality ruling impacts the legal aid practice and how you can enforce the directive of Obergefell in challenging forums. This training will focus on family law issues, but will also touch on common probate matters that disproportionately affect the low-income LGBT population.

Presenter, Kerene Moore is currently a practicing attorney for Legal Services of S. Central Michigan (LSSCM), where she has represented underserved Michigan residents in civil legal matters for the past 8 years. She is a graduate of The University of Michigan where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Juris Doctor degree. She has a strong commitment to public service, including performing voting rights work prior to joining LSSCM. Kerene values providing a voice to marginalized community members, and regularly advocates on behalf of survivors of domestic violence, undocumented immigrants, disabled persons, and other underrepresented populations.

Kerene, a member of the National LGBT Bar Association, and presenter at its 2015 Lavender Law Conference, is active in nonprofit and legal organizations that promote access to justice for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. She is Vice President of the Jim Toy Community Center, and Director of its Know Your Rights Project, which offers free LGBT-centered advice and referrals across the state of Michigan. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Equality Michigan and as Co-Chair of the Washtenaw County Bar Association’s LGBT Rights Section.
